I'll be back to off road in the fall. Four streetbikes to enjoy until then...when the bugs are gone!
 
It is the hottest day of the weekend, but maybe! Weather-wise, Saturday looks like the best day.
 
I’m free Monday for DS or street ride. Street ride with Tracy on Saturday for me but if y’all are out we can meet up!
 
Back to Dual Sport, topic stealers. I'm going to start planning a fall ride, most like late Sept, probably 3 days:

  1. Highlands Area again - could. Lots of spots to ride around there. 3 hour 40 minute drive.
  2. Wilson Creek Area - tons of gravel & off-road to explore. Closer
  3. A chunk of MABDR again. Segments 2 and 3 are pretty excellent, especially 3 in WV.
  4. A loop/chunk of the Trans America Trail?
The "Pro" of staying in a spot and doing "loops" or out and back rides is that it's easy to shorten them, and you don't have to carry your clothes/junk/tools, and you can shorten a ride if you want. You lose out a bit on the fun of navigating to a place in the middle of nowhere, and experiencing different stops that you get with a longer "route".

Both are fun. I think I lean a little towards the central spot with some loops. Time to look at GravelMap and ADVRider.
 
You're anti-Andy...

Having done many, I like both types of trips, but loops are a lot easier to plan and better if anything goes wrong.
 
Just a note to consider. Tellico is a great central location to a ton of DS riding. And there is such a mix of single track to open gravel. If you want to get together one night to look at maps let me know!

Oh and I have a ton of tracks loaded on my gps as well.

Sounds great, would love to see! The more I ride the big pig off road, the more I want dirt, and the less I want gravel. Also need to spend some time setting my suspension up better - feels like it needs more preload in the rear, and maybe drop the forks a bit in the front. Pushes the front tire.

Cool! Tellico is a lot more gravel, but there is some single track. Trail 81 and 82 to be exact. So that being said the only other single track I know of is Iron Mountain. And there is a ton of gravel over there too. The ride over Big Walker Mtn is pretty cool too, up by Wytheville.

I know your way more capable at anything than me two wheel wise, and I am sure sand would be no different but I am going to say again, you gotta get to the Sandhills with me.
 
Here is a broad overlay of GPX tracks I have saved. MABDR, SEAT, SCAR, Smoky Mountain 500 and so on. 300 tracks in all and a lot is broken up to make pieces of a route.

I also have the Old Blue Ridge Trail gpx somewhere, that’s where the Iron Mtn footage came from.
 
All sounds good Boike! Definitely want to get in a Sandhills ride this winter too. Wonder if I should install a rim lock in my rear wheel so I can drop air pressure down to 11 or 12. Hard to believe a 70hp dual sport doesn't have one.

Sold out! But actually a "reasonable" price for a Baja 1000 run including a rented bike and a guide. I've toyed with the idea of doing the Baja 1000 trip for years. I know a couple guys who have done it with rented bikes and Osmand GPS, no guide. Probably time to put it on the bucket list before I cancel due to EOG.

Does $3500 include the rented Tuareg? If so that's not a bad deal and KK and I have been talking about doing something like that. And we're running out of time to do it so we gotta get a move on!

Yes, $3,500 includes the bike. I didn't read any of the fine print about other costs.
 
So if I understand the FAQ correctly, $3500 covers the bike rental, lodging, food, a chase vehicle, and a guided tour. That's a pretty good deal! If they do it again next year we are going to seriously consider it.
 
It is a pretty awesome deal for a tour like this. Most of the other Baja 1000 style tours I see are almost $5k, with the difference being those tours go all the way down to Cabo San Lucas.

Putting a boring budget minded twist on things - by using double occupancy, our own bikes, and not including the price of tires, I think I spent $450 on the MABDR segments 1, 2, and 3 last year. 4 nights of shared hotel rooms, 4 dinners out, and 12 gallons of gas or so. But.....definitely not as cool as Baja!

I bet if they advertised this for 2023 it would sell out in minutes.
 
You guys and gals might enjoy Itchy Boots' episode from yesterday around Moab, but in a side by side (she damaged her foot 2 episodes earlier...first injury, and she been...everywhere.

Incredible scenery.
